WORKING ON YOUR BUSINESSAnchor

A NOTE FROM OUR BUSINESS ADVISOR:
JANET CRESSWELL

This week I want to discuss what makes an entrepreneur, and what do successful business women have in common.

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS?
It’s not easy to be successful in business, and by looking at how others have become successful, we may learn how we might do the same.
Success means different things to different people – money, happiness, a healthy family. What does success look like for you? The paths people take to be successful are varied, and their life experiences are very different from your own, so do not compare your progress with others; there is no true comparison.

It is the characteristics of entrepreneurs which are worth taking notice of. Some you may already have, and some you will need to work at to obtain.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Entrepreneurs must obviously have the skills and knowledge for the business they want to work in. For some this will be from previous employment, for others through training, or a combination of both. But successful entrepreneurs never stop learning – improving their skills and knowledge, including how to run their business, and incorporating new techniques and opportunities, like the rise of social media.

TAKING RISKS
Entrepreneurs are risk takers, but they assess the risks and understand the consequences of their actions. They are not high risk takers, and base their decisions on past experience and current information. Sometimes they loose, but often they win, so entrepreneurs are also resilient. They are also optimistic! They know how to learn from what didn’t work and try again. They have good judgement, ability to analyse and to problem solve.

WORKING WITH OTHERS
Successful businesses come through hard work, a willingness to try and a passion to succeed.
And success doesn’t come through working alone. A successful entrepreneur will like working with people, even as a sole trader. Good social skills and an openness in discussing ideas helps spark creativity and maintains motivation, so build a team of family, friends and business connections around you who you can trust to give honest advice and opinions. But successful entrepreneurs don’t like to be guided by others, they like to be in control of decisions and be their own boss!

GOOD RELATIONSHIPS
Successful entrepreneurs also have integrity and honesty. They build and maintain good relationships with their customers and suppliers, and through good communication skills are able to persuade and convince others.

BE CURIOUS
An entrepreneur must be flexible, adaptable and creative to be able to have or learn all she needs to run a successful business, so perhaps the best characteristic is to be curious and to keep asking questions. The help you need is never far away.
